I had the pleasure of going to a Folk Festival for the first time ever.
I didn`t know what to expect but the luxury of having youtube access to listen to and watch clips of the bands performing gave me a clue.
The venue was a nice choice despite the fact it feels like a walk to eternity to get to the main field where the entrance was.
It was a well organised event with wristbands given to allow yourself entrance to the designated areas of the festival, which included an indoor bar with local live acts performing throughout the day.
On the main stage the acts that stood out for me was Heidi Talbot, Faustus and The Bad Shepherds.
I will focus on The Bad Shepherds, It`s punk songs on folk instruments.
A brilliant way to describe what the band are about.
Delving into the history of punk music with songs like `I fought the law, Once in a lifetime Down the tube station at midnight`
We also got treated to great songs like The Model by Kraftwerk, Once In a lifetime by Talking heads and a fantastic version of The Specials track Friday night saturday morning.
The only thing missing for me. I`d have loved a version of a Madness track but it was a brilliant gig all the same.
It was like the ultimate back catalogue of a musical style brought back to life in the 2000`s
As the songs rolled on the crowd lapped it up chanting for more and we got more with a great encore to wrap up a great day.
I rank The Bad Shepherds on par with watching the likes of Madness and Status Quo live which is an accolade they deserve.
Their album Yan, Tyan, Tethera, Methera is worth treating yourselves to a genius in music
